White Swiss Shepherd

🐾 Breed guide

White Swiss Shepherd

The White Swiss Shepherd, also known as the Berger Blanc Suisse, is a stunning, elegant breed that shares its ancestry with the German Shepherd but has been developed as a distinct breed in its own right. White-coated German Shepherds have existed since the very earliest days of the breed – in fact, the grandfather of the first registered German Shepherd, Horand von Grafrath, was a white-coated dog named Grief von Sparwasser. However, in the 1930s, white-coated dogs were excluded from the German Shepherd breed standard in Germany, as the white colour was falsely believed to be linked to genetic defects. White German Shepherds were preserved by dedicated breeders in North America and eventually brought to Switzerland, where the breed was refined and developed into the Berger Blanc Suisse. The FCI officially recognised it as a separate breed in 2003. The White Swiss Shepherd is a breathtakingly beautiful dog – its pure white coat, combined with its athletic, well-proportioned build and intelligent, expressive dark eyes, creates a truly striking appearance. While they share the German Shepherd's intelligence, versatility, and trainability, White Swiss Shepherds are generally known for having a softer, gentler temperament. They are less intense and more sensitive than their German cousins, making them wonderfully approachable family dogs. They are highly social, forming deep bonds with all family members, and are excellent with children and other pets. Their eagerness to please and quick learning ability make them outstanding in obedience, agility, therapy work, and search and rescue. In India, the White Swiss Shepherd is a rare and highly sought-after breed, admired for its ethereal beauty, gentle disposition, and versatile working ability.

🫧 Care tips

  • Provide 1.5 to 2 hours of daily exercise – they are active, intelligent dogs that need both physical activity and mental challenges
  • Brush their dense white coat 2–3 times weekly, daily during heavy shedding seasons to manage their considerable hair loss
  • Their white coat shows dirt easily – regular baths are needed, but avoid over-bathing to preserve natural coat oils
  • Early socialisation and consistent positive training are important – they are sensitive dogs that respond poorly to harsh methods
  • Protect from extreme heat in Indian summers – their dense double coat makes them heat-sensitive; ensure shade, water, and cooler exercise times
Temperament: Gentle, Intelligent, Loyal, Alert, Eager to Please
