🐾 Breed guide

West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier, affectionately known as the "Westie," is one of the most recognisable and beloved small dog breeds in the world. Originating from the rugged Scottish Highlands, this plucky little terrier was originally bred to hunt rats, foxes, and other vermin on the rocky estates of Scotland. The breed's origin story is steeped in Scottish legend: it is said that Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm of Poltalloch in Argyllshire began selectively breeding white terriers after one of his reddish-brown Cairn Terriers was tragically mistaken for a fox and shot during a hunt. From that day, Malcolm resolved to breed only white-coated terriers that could never be confused with quarry – and thus the Westie was born. The breed was first shown under various names including the Poltalloch Terrier and the Roseneath Terrier before being officially named the West Highland White Terrier in 1906. Westies are compact, sturdy little dogs with a distinctive bright white coat, dark almond-shaped eyes, pointed erect ears, and a characteristically short, carrot-shaped tail that was historically designed to be grabbed by the hunter to pull the dog out of burrows. Despite their small stature, Westies have enormous personalities – they are confident, bold, and remarkably self-assured, carrying themselves with the swagger of a much larger dog. They are friendly, outgoing, and endlessly entertaining, with a playful, mischievous streak that keeps their owners laughing. Westies are adaptable dogs that do well in both apartments and houses, and they make excellent companions for families, singles, and seniors alike. In India, the Westie is admired for its charming appearance, manageable size, and spirited personality, making it a wonderful companion for urban living.

  • Moderate daily exercise – walks, play sessions, and garden exploration keep them happy and healthy
  • They retain strong terrier instincts – keep them on a leash or in secure areas as they will chase small animals
