πΎ Breed guide
Chippiparai
The Chippiparai is a rare and elegant Indian sighthound that hails from the Chippiparai region near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Bred by the royal families of the Tirunelveli and Madurai districts, the Chippiparai was the prized hunting dog of Tamil royalty, used to chase deer, wild boar, and hare across the arid plains of southern India. This breed is a testament to India's rich canine heritage β lean, aerodynamic, and built for explosive speed. Chippiparais have a sleek, almost sculpted appearance with their short, close-lying coat, deep chest, and long, powerful legs. They are incredibly hardy dogs, perfectly adapted to the hot Indian climate, and require very little grooming or special care. Chippiparais are intensely loyal β they tend to bond deeply with one person and can be reserved or aloof with others. They are natural guardians who are always alert and watchful. In recent years, there has been a growing movement to preserve and promote this magnificent indigenous breed, which was once on the verge of being forgotten.
