🐾 Breed guide

Basenji

The Basenji is one of the oldest and most unique dog breeds in the world, originating from the Congo Basin in Central Africa. Often called the "barkless dog," the Basenji does not bark like other dogs – instead, it produces a distinctive yodel-like sound known as a "barroo," due to its uniquely shaped larynx. Basenjis are elegant, athletic, and cat-like in many ways: they groom themselves meticulously, are fiercely independent, and can even climb fences. They are incredibly intelligent but have a strong-willed, almost aloof personality that sets them apart from more eager-to-please breeds. In India, the Basenji is a rare but admired breed, prized by owners who appreciate a clean, quiet, and low-maintenance companion with a regal bearing. Their short coat and African origins make them well-suited to warm climates.
