🐾 Breed guide

Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound is one of the most visually striking dog breeds in the world, instantly recognisable by its long, flowing, silky coat and regal bearing. An ancient sighthound breed originating from the mountains of Afghanistan, they were originally bred to hunt large prey in harsh terrain, relying on their incredible speed and keen eyesight. Afghan Hounds carry themselves with an almost aristocratic elegance and are often described as "the king of dogs." Despite their glamorous appearance, they are athletic, agile, and surprisingly fast – capable of reaching speeds up to 65 km/h. In India, Afghan Hounds are prized as show dogs and loyal companions. They have an independent, sometimes aloof personality, which can make training a patient endeavour. However, with their families, they are affectionate and playful. Their stunning coat, while beautiful, demands significant grooming commitment.
