Whippet

The Whippet is often described as the "poor man's Greyhound" – a nickname that, while historically accurate, hardly does justice to this graceful, elegant, and utterly charming breed. Developed in Victorian-era England by working-class communities in the north, the Whippet was created by crossing small Greyhounds with terriers and later with Italian Greyhounds, producing a compact, lightning-fast sighthound that could hunt rabbits and race competitively for entertainment. Whippets are the fastest domesticated animals of their weight, capable of reaching speeds up to 56 km/h – making them incredibly efficient sprinters that can accelerate from a standstill to full speed in seconds. Their sleek, aerodynamic build is a masterpiece of canine athleticism: a deep chest for lung capacity, a flexible spine that allows a "double suspension gallop," long powerful legs, and a lean, muscular frame with virtually no body fat. Yet despite being built for explosive speed, Whippets are paradoxically one of the calmest, most relaxed house dogs imaginable. At home, they are the ultimate couch potatoes – quiet, gentle, and content to spend hours curled up on the softest available surface, ideally under a blanket. They are remarkably quiet dogs that rarely bark, making them excellent apartment companions. Whippets are incredibly affectionate and sensitive, forming deep emotional bonds with their families. They are gentle with children, friendly with other dogs (especially other sighthounds), and have a sweet, undemanding nature that makes them wonderfully easy to live with. In India, the Whippet is an excellent choice for the climate – their thin, short coat and lean build make them naturally well-suited to warm weather, unlike many other Western breeds.

🫧 Care tips

  • Their thin coat and minimal body fat mean they feel the cold – provide a warm dog coat or jumper in air-conditioned rooms or cool weather
  • Provide daily exercise with opportunities to sprint in a secure, fenced area – they have a very strong prey drive and will chase small animals
  • Minimal grooming needed – a weekly wipe-down with a damp cloth and occasional brushing keeps their fine coat in great shape
  • They are sensitive dogs – use gentle, positive training methods; harsh corrections can make them anxious and withdrawn
  • Well-suited to Indian climates due to their short coat, but provide shade and water during peak summer heat and avoid midday walks
Temperament: Gentle, Quiet, Affectionate, Athletic, Calm
