🐾 Breed guide

Siberian Husky

The Siberian Husky is one of the most strikingly beautiful and captivating dog breeds in the world, with a wolf-like appearance that turns heads wherever it goes. Developed over 3,000 years ago by the Chukchi people of northeastern Siberia, these remarkable dogs were bred as endurance sled dogs capable of pulling light loads over vast frozen distances at moderate speeds in some of the harshest conditions on earth, where temperatures regularly plunge below -50Β°C. The Chukchi people treated their Huskies as cherished family members – the dogs slept with the children to provide warmth and were considered essential to the tribe's survival. The Siberian Husky gained worldwide fame during the 1925 Great Race of Mercy, when relay teams of sled dogs transported life-saving diphtheria antitoxin serum across 1,085 km of frozen Alaskan wilderness to the isolated town of Nome. The lead dog of the final team, Balto, became an international hero, and his bronze statue stands in New York City's Central Park to this day. Siberian Huskies are medium-sized, athletic dogs with a graceful, effortless gait that reflects their endurance heritage. Their most mesmerising feature is their eyes – which can be blue, brown, amber, or even heterochromatic (one of each colour), giving them an almost mystical, piercing gaze. Huskies are famously friendly, outgoing, and social dogs that love everyone – which makes them terrible guard dogs but wonderful companions. They are pack-oriented and thrive in the company of other dogs and people. However, they are also independent, strong-willed, and notorious escape artists with an extraordinary ability to jump fences, dig under barriers, and open latches. In India, the Siberian Husky has become extremely popular due to its stunning appearance, but prospective owners must understand that this is an Arctic breed that struggles severely in hot Indian climates and requires extraordinary commitment to exercise, grooming, and climate management.

🫧 Care tips

  • Absolutely not suited for hot Indian climates without air-conditioned living – they are Arctic dogs that suffer greatly in heat and are prone to heatstroke
  • Provide at least 2 hours of vigorous daily exercise – running, hiking, and active play; a bored Husky is a destructive Husky
  • Brush their thick double coat 2–3 times weekly, daily during the massive bi-annual shedding ("blowing coat") when fur comes out in clumps
  • Secure your property with high, dig-proof fencing – Huskies are legendary escape artists and should never be off-leash in unsecured areas
  • They are pack dogs and do not tolerate being alone – provide companionship (human or canine) and never leave them isolated for long periods
Temperament: Friendly, Outgoing, Mischievous, Energetic, Gentle
