🐾 Breed guide

Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is the smallest and oldest of Japan's native breeds, with a history stretching back over 3,000 years. Originally bred to hunt small game and birds in the mountainous regions of Japan, the Shiba Inu is a compact, muscular, and agile dog with a fox-like face, pointed ears, and a curled tail that give it an irresistibly charming appearance. The breed nearly went extinct during World War II due to bombing and post-war distemper outbreaks, but dedicated breeding programmes saved this national treasure. Shiba Inus are famous for their bold, spirited personality – often described as having a "big dog" attitude in a small body. They are fiercely independent, cat-like in their cleanliness, and have a well-known dramatic streak, including the infamous "Shiba scream," a high-pitched vocalisation they make when excited or displeased. Despite their independent nature, Shibas are deeply loyal to their families and can be surprisingly affectionate on their own terms. They have become a global internet sensation, most notably as the face of the "Doge" meme and the inspiration behind the Dogecoin cryptocurrency. In India, Shiba Inus are gaining popularity among urban pet owners who admire their compact size, clean habits, and spirited personality. Their adaptability to apartment living and relatively low grooming needs (outside shedding season) make them appealing to city dwellers.

  • Keep them on a leash or in a secure area – their strong prey drive means they will chase small animals
