Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog
The Romanian Mioritic Shepherd Dog is a magnificent, large livestock guardian breed from the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, where it has protected flocks of sheep from wolves, bears, and lynx for centuries. The name "Mioritic" derives from "mioarΔ," the Romanian word for a young ewe, reflecting the breed's deep connection to sheep herding. This is one of Romania's most cherished national breeds and was officially recognised by the FCI in 2015. The Mioritic is an imposing and strikingly beautiful dog β its long, shaggy, predominantly white or grey coat gives it an almost bear-like or Old English Sheepdog-like appearance, with hair often covering its eyes. Beneath that luxurious, weather-resistant coat lies a powerful, well-muscled frame built for endurance and strength in the demanding mountain terrain. Romanian Mioritic Shepherds are natural guardians with an innate instinct to protect their family and territory. They are calm, composed, and dignified in demeanour β not prone to unnecessary aggression or excitability, but absolutely fearless and decisive when a genuine threat presents itself. What sets the Mioritic apart from many other livestock guardian breeds is its remarkably gentle and affectionate nature with its family. They are wonderfully patient with children and form deep, devoted bonds with their owners. They have a calm, almost serene presence in the home, content to lie quietly near their family while maintaining a watchful eye on their surroundings. However, they are naturally wary of strangers and will position themselves protectively between their family and any unfamiliar person. In India, the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd is an extremely rare breed that would appeal to experienced owners with large properties who appreciate a gentle giant with powerful guardian instincts.

𫧠Care tips
- Their long, shaggy coat requires brushing 3β4 times a week to prevent severe matting, especially behind the ears, legs, and belly
- Not suited for hot Indian climates β their dense, heavy coat makes them extremely heat-sensitive; they need cool or air-conditioned environments
- Provide ample space β they are large guardian dogs that need room to move and patrol, not suited for apartment living
- Early and thorough socialisation is essential to manage their natural wariness of strangers and protective instincts
- Moderate exercise is sufficient β daily walks and free roaming in a secure area; they are not high-energy but need consistent activity
