🐾 Breed guide

Rajapalayam

The Rajapalayam is a magnificent Indian sighthound that originates from the town of Rajapalayam in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. This ancient breed is one of India's most iconic native dogs, historically bred by the Nayakar dynasty and used as a fierce guard dog and boar hunter. The Rajapalayam is instantly recognisable by its striking all-white coat, pink nose, and pale golden or blue-tinted eyes – a combination that gives it an almost regal, otherworldly appearance. These dogs are powerfully built with a deep chest, muscular limbs, and a graceful, effortless gait that reveals their sighthound heritage. Rajapalayams are fiercely loyal and deeply devoted to their family, often forming an especially strong bond with one person. They are naturally alert and protective, making them outstanding guard dogs. However, they can be reserved and wary with strangers, and early socialisation is crucial. The breed was historically so valued that it is said the Nayakar rulers of Rajapalayam used packs of these dogs alongside their cavalry in battles against the British. Today, the Rajapalayam is considered a rare and endangered breed, and conservation efforts are underway in Tamil Nadu. The Indian Postal Department even issued a commemorative stamp in 2005 honouring this national treasure. Being a native Indian breed, the Rajapalayam is naturally well-adapted to the Indian climate and thrives in warm conditions.
