Ragdoll Cat

🐾 Breed guide

Ragdoll Cat

The Ragdoll is one of the largest and most enchanting domestic cat breeds, famous for its striking blue eyes, luxurious semi-long coat, and an extraordinary tendency to go completely limp and relaxed when picked up – just like a ragdoll, which is how the breed got its name. Ragdolls were developed in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker in Riverside, California, using a white longhaired cat named Josephine as the foundation. The breed was specifically created for its gentle, docile temperament and its remarkable affinity for human companionship. Ragdolls are often described as "puppy-like cats" because of their tendency to follow their owners from room to room, greet them at the door, and even play fetch. They are one of the most people-oriented cat breeds, craving human attention and physical affection. Unlike many cats, Ragdolls genuinely enjoy being held, cuddled, and carried around, and they rarely extend their claws during play. They are exceptionally gentle with children and get along beautifully with other pets, including dogs. Ragdolls are a pointed breed, meaning they are born completely white and gradually develop their colour and pattern over the first two years of life. Their stunning sapphire blue eyes are a breed hallmark and are present in all Ragdolls. Despite their large size – males can weigh up to 9 kg – Ragdolls are remarkably calm and laid-back, preferring a quiet, serene environment. They are indoor cats by nature and should not be allowed to roam outdoors, as their trusting, non-aggressive temperament makes them vulnerable. In India, the Ragdoll is increasingly popular among cat lovers who want a stunningly beautiful, affectionate, and gentle companion that thrives in indoor living.

🫧 Care tips

  • Brush their silky coat 2–3 times a week to prevent tangles – their minimal undercoat makes grooming easier than other longhaired breeds
  • Strictly an indoor cat – their docile, trusting nature makes them vulnerable to outdoor dangers and they lack street-smart instincts
  • Provide interactive toys, puzzle feeders, and regular play sessions to keep them mentally stimulated
  • Monitor their diet carefully – Ragdolls are prone to obesity; feed high-quality cat food in measured portions
  • Regular vet check-ups for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and kidney health; keep them cool in Indian summers with air-conditioned spaces
Temperament: Gentle, Calm, Affectionate, Docile, Sociable
