Pekingese
The Pekingese is one of the most ancient and aristocratic dog breeds in existence, with a history that stretches back over 2,000 years to the imperial courts of China. These small but remarkably regal dogs were bred exclusively for Chinese royalty and were considered sacred companions of the emperors. According to Chinese legend, the Pekingese was created by the Buddha, who shrunk a lion down to the size of a dog β which is why the breed is often called the "Lion Dog." For centuries, Pekingese were cloistered within the walls of the Imperial Palace in Beijing (then Peking), and commoners were forbidden from owning them β theft of a Pekingese was punishable by death. The breed was unknown to the Western world until 1860, when British soldiers looted the Imperial Palace during the Second Opium War and discovered five Pekingese dogs guarding the body of their owner, who had taken her own life rather than face capture. One of these dogs was presented to Queen Victoria and named "Looty." The Pekingese carries itself with unmistakable dignity and self-importance, walking with a distinctive rolling gait that reflects its confident, unhurried approach to life. Their flat face, large expressive eyes, and magnificent flowing mane give them a lion-like appearance that is both endearing and impressive. Pekingese are fiercely loyal to their chosen person and can be surprisingly bold and courageous despite their small size. They are independent thinkers with a famously stubborn streak β they prefer to do things on their own terms. In India, the Pekingese has been a cherished companion breed for many years, particularly popular among those who appreciate a dignified, low-exercise dog with a rich imperial heritage.
