🐾 Breed guide

Akita

The Akita is one of Japan's most treasured and iconic dog breeds, originating from the mountainous Akita Prefecture in northern Honshu. These powerful, noble dogs were originally bred to hunt formidable prey including wild boar, elk, and the fearsome Yezo bear. In Japanese culture, the Akita holds a deeply symbolic status – figurines of Akitas are traditionally given as gifts to newborn babies as symbols of health, happiness, and long life. The breed's most famous representative is Hachiko, the legendary Akita who waited faithfully at Tokyo's Shibuya Station for his deceased owner every day for nearly 10 years, becoming a global symbol of unwavering loyalty. A bronze statue of Hachiko still stands at Shibuya Station and is one of Japan's most visited landmarks. In 1931, the Akita was officially designated as a Japanese Natural Monument. There are two distinct varieties of the breed: the Japanese Akita (Akita Inu), which adheres to strict colour standards, and the American Akita, which comes in a wider range of colours and has a more bear-like head. Akitas are powerfully built dogs with a broad head, small triangular eyes, erect ears, and a distinctive curled tail carried over the back. They have a dignified, almost regal bearing and carry themselves with quiet confidence. Akitas are profoundly loyal to their families – often forming an especially intense bond with one person – and are naturally protective without being overtly aggressive. They are known for their cat-like cleanliness, often grooming themselves meticulously. However, they can be dominant with other dogs, particularly those of the same sex, and their strong, independent nature requires an experienced owner who understands guardian breeds. In India, the Akita is a rare and prestigious breed that appeals to experienced dog owners seeking a loyal, powerful, and dignified companion.

🫧 Care tips

  • Only for experienced owners – Akitas are strong-willed, dominant, and require firm, consistent leadership from puppyhood
  • Early and extensive socialisation is critical – they can be aggressive toward other dogs, especially of the same sex
  • Brush their thick double coat 2–3 times weekly, daily during heavy shedding seasons (they "blow" their coat twice a year)
  • Moderate daily exercise – long walks and secure, fenced yard time; they are not high-energy but need consistent activity
  • Protect from extreme heat in Indian climates – their dense double coat makes them highly heat-sensitive; air-conditioned living is recommended
Temperament: Loyal, Dignified, Courageous, Alert, Independent
